Create Retreat – BTS

I recently wrapped a week of Create Retreat in collaboration with photographer Emily Soto! The retreat was a 3 day photographer’s ‘vacay’ which meant students stayed at the location whilst also learning and shooting with us. The retreat venue is one of our favorite locations in California (for obvious reasons, look how inspiring it is!).

We completed two retreats back to back, meeting just over 30 students in total (some new and old faces, which was lovely to see and great to catch up with past students!).
What we wanted to achieve was a sense of community. Being an artist is not easy. You have days where you work alone and you have no one to encourage you. You have days where you feel like you are stuck in a rut trying to find that next piece of inspiration. I’ve been there. We’ve all been there. Create Retreat was created to give every artist the opportunity to create in the company of others.

Over the course of the week we saw so many artist friendships forming and we feel like we completed what we set out to do. It’s a big belief of mine that creative friendships encourage growth.
Another bonus for me was watching Emily work and hearing her story. I’ve had the opportunity to teach alone at many workshops and seminars but collaborating with a friend was a great insight. I loved watching her film techniques and seeing her creation process from start to finish. I don’t shoot with film but hearing more about it as a current art form and how marketable she finds it was very interesting.
